The Democratic Governance of Waitākere Ranges Regional Park is under Threat!

Auckland, New Zealand — The Waitākere Ranges Regional Park, cherished by generations of Aucklanders, is at a pivotal moment. Auckland Council is currently considering a formal agreement with Te Kawerau ā Maki iwi and the Crown which could substantially alter how the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park and the Heritage Area are governed and managed.

The Proposal: A joint committee, with equal representation from the iwi and the Crown/Auckland Council, is proposed as part of the agreement. This co-governance model, outlined in the Waitākere Ranges Heritage Area Act 2008 under a "Deed of Acknowledgement," surpasses the Act's original intention of recognizing tangata whenua's contributions to land management.

The committee’s powers would include developing a strategic plan for the Heritage Area, creating a work programme to meet its objectives, monitoring outcomes, and influencing decisions that affect the region.

Potential Impacts on Public Access: Te Kawerau ā Maki iwi has expressed intentions to restrict public access to approximately 35% of the regional park's land, threatening to eliminate 19 tracks (16 fully closed, 3 partially closed). This could deeply affect the public's ability to use and enjoy this treasured space.

Consultation Open Now: Auckland Council invites public feedback on the proposed Deed of Acknowledgement. The consultation period will close at 11:59 PM on Monday, April 28.

How to Participate:

A Call to Action: The Waitākere Ranges Regional Park is a shared heritage, deeply rooted in the contributions of community groups, iwi, and families who have cared for its preservation over the years. We urge all Aucklanders to speak up for democratic governance that represents the diversity of the people and communities who call the Waitākere Ranges their own.
